Two top leaders of the Khmer Rouge, Nuon Chea, 88, and Khieu Samphan, 83, were found guilty of crimes against humanity, in a verdict delivered Thursday morning by the UN assisted genocide tribunal, ECCC. Both men were sentenced to life imprisonment in jail.

This is the first time top Khmer Rouge policymakers were put on trial. The trial began in November of 2011 and concluded last October.

The charges of crimes against humanity focused on the forced movement of  populations from Phnom Penh and other regions. The charges also included the alleged executions of soldiers from the Khmer Republic, and general extermination and enforced disappearances of hundreds of thousands of civilians.Check back for the Khmer Times print edition out tomorrow that includes Cambodian’s reactions to the verdict.
